Library Orientation for Students

  1. Rules: No gum, food, or drinks in the library. No loud talking. No horseplaying. No leaning back in the chairs. Also, please don’t move chairs unless asked or put feet in chairs.
  2. Students will need their lunch numbers to check out books. After the lunch number is entered and the student presses enter, the student will scan the book. When checking books in, the student will scan the book in and place it on the front of the wooden cart. Students are responsible for books once they are checked out.
  3. Policies: Two books may be checked out at a time. Each book may be checked out for a two-week period. A book may be renewed one time. There is a limit of one new book and one drawing book. New books are for two weeks only—no renewal. Please check out only one book per series at a time.
  4. For lost hardcover books, you will owe a minimum of $20. If the book costs more, you must pay the higher cost. Lost hardcover books can NOT be replaced with copies bought from department stores, book stores, etc. Copies bought for the library are special library-bound copies. This means that those books are made especially for use in the library so that they can change hands multiple times without receiving too much damage. Because of this, they are more expensive.
  5. Check labels on book covers carefully before check out. Books returned with “picked” or torn labels will be $1 per label.
  6. Always use a shelf marker when selecting books. It helps get books back in their proper place so you and your classmates can find them easily.
  7. Don’t push books to back of the shelf. The front alignment looks neater and makes it easier for you to see all the books.
  8. Use chromebooks only as instructed by the librarian.
  9. Magazines and newspapers are for use while in the library. They may not be checked out. You cannot cut anything out of magazines or newspapers. Do not write in magazines. Use your own paper.
  10. Reference books are for use in the library and may not be checked out.
  11. Biographies are organized by the first three letters of the last name of the person about whom the book is written. Use the letter labels on the shelf to help you locate the books. AR books have a color-coded label on them giving the grade level. The biography collection is organized by the last name of the author of the book.
  12. Fiction books are shelved in order of the author’s last name (use first three letters). Use the letter labels on the shelf to help you locate the books. AR books are marked with a color-coded label giving the grade level. Story collection is located after Z.
  13. Non-fiction books are organized according to the Dewey Decimal System and then by the first three letters of author’s last name. They are grouped 000—999. Use posters and number labels to help you find sections of books. AR books have a color-coded label on them giving the grade level.
  14. Students may use Destiny on chromebooks to help locate a desired book or to locate a book on a topic. Access the link, and click on West Blocton Middle School. After Destiny opens, type the title of the book, the author’s name, a subject, or other terms into the search bar. Click the appropriate heading, and Destiny will show a list of results. It will also tell you if the book is in the library or checked out. If you click on the book, you will get more information about it. We will spend some class time learning about other things Destiny can help you do. If you will use this at home the day before your library day, you can get a good idea of books you may like to check out. Destiny can also help you find websites on most topics.*
  15. Students are able to access eBooks through Capstone Library and Alabama Virtual Library. Capstone Library can be accessed through our school's specific Capstone Interactive link. Capstone Library eBooks can also be accessed by going to Destiny, leaving the search bar blank, choosing eBook as the material type, and pressing Enter. Alabama Virtual Library can be accessed through www.avl.lib.al.us. A tab at the top is labeled “E-Book Resources.” Using the “Middle School” tab in the 2nd set of tabs (orange) will narrow the results.
  16. Students are able to take Book Taco* quizzes on their chromebooks. Teachers determine if/how these will count toward students' grades.
